As a woman who largely cares about my work in and out of the home, I’ve found that one of my most sacred freedoms has been absolving myself of any societally imposed timelines around our careers. Approaching my 11th year raising this business and 9 years as a mother, I want to keep sharing an alternate version of the script, the one that insists we perpetually press on the gas on our careers between the ages of 25-40.
If we choose to mother, or if motherhood has found us, a commitment to this timeline keeps us in an endless doing-too-much-not-doing-enough-pressure-guilt loop, where the wheels feel like they’re spinning out and we’re no longer steering. So when the very real pressures of our growth curve and the shifting needs of our family came to a collision, I decided I would operate from a place of abundance and not lack: I have plenty of time.
Here’s the new script, friends. It offers the gift of the brakes, the access to them and confidence to keep our foot there when needed. This Mother’s Day season, if you’re feeling like you need a release on the valve, I hope you’ll choose this new story, too. It’ll hand you a new car and a different path. The mileage signs will be fewer and farther between, perhaps, but you’ll find that your destination will be there no matter whether you’re 40 or 80. And the ride will be so much more enjoyable.
To empowering us all,
Pat
