Human New Year

Human New Year

A human new year. I wonder what would happen if we collectively omitted “happy” at the end of the countdown. Perhaps this would give us the reset we’re yearning for - the cacophony of party horns and sirens less disorienting.

My one life carries the stories of three separate unexpected deaths, a friend bedridden due to injury, a fellow business owner navigating overwhelming flood damage - how much more when we tally our totals.

Might we put down our phones, should the suffering there lessen our ability to be present with the one here. Maybe the outrage is better spent in the outpour - of love, of togetherness, of community. If there’s anything this year has taught us, our humanity is defined by resiliency and generosity, the capacity to rise above the ashes.

Human new year, friends.
