Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

A part of one big fruit basket, each piece so instrumental. The best part of having these ladies is not only the camaraderie that forms in work, but also in life. Halloween seems to have been another way to express how sweet this is.

Happy Halloween from all of us to you! Hope this is the best one yet. (:

Making Leaps and Preserving Creative Freedom

Making Leaps and Preserving Creative Freedom

Hyeyoon, Senior Graphic Designer

There’s a common idea among creatives that you sell your soul when you become a graphic designer, that you’re not truly an independent artist and simply answer to your director. In some ways, I understand this sentiment. When I was fresh out of college, I was fortunate to be hired at a large corporate company, but my dreams as a graphic designer were quickly distorted when I realized that working in a corporate setting felt no different from working at any other office job; each project would go through multiple rounds of review and revisions, after which my work would end up totally unrecognizable from where it began. Feeling discouraged and creatively stifled, I started searching for a job in my biggest passion, stationery, and eventually landed at my current role as Senior Graphic Designer at Our Heiday.

This series of prints was inspired by a trip to Amsterdam, Berlin, and Prague that Clarence and I took just before we found out I was pregnant with Char. What an unexpected, much-welcomed surprise that our time in Amsterdam coincided with the Matisse exhibit at Stedelijk Museum.

As We Turn Four

As We Turn Four
As we prepare for our birthday next week (yes, mark your calendars for our anniversary sale on June 27th!), it seemed most appropriate to remember our story. Stories sustain everything we do and in the shuffle of all that needs to get done in a day, I don't want to forget the one we're writing here. So back to the beginning we go.

Time

our heiday nss
And we’re back. Just a week ago, we were wrapping up our busiest day of NSS and just a week before that, shipping boxes, making last minute notes, squaring away details. We’re now settled again into the studio, taking care of the post-show madness and preparing for another season ahead. It’s incredible, that time works this way, moving forward unapologetically. As difficult as it is to blog with all of the other aspects of the company to run, writing has been so essential to our values as a team - the decision to pause, to remember, to reflect, to rest. Time doesn’t stop for anybody and in our world of go, sitting in the arena of hustle is a difficult place to fight for something different.

Tackling NSS Solo - Reflections

Tackling NSS Solo - Reflections
This is the first year, since our NSS debut in 2015, that I feel like there’s solid teamwork at play to get us ready for New York in just a few short weeks. It seems odd that this would be the case, as Donna is still on maternity leave and I’m heading to NY alone until our Studio Manager flies in the next day. Last year was the first time Donna and I got to be in the booth together as business partners and it was a big adventure with both our husbands there to assemble the hard wall booth they built and Charlotte experiencing travel for the first time. The year before, I was just about to pop so Donna was there without me. It seems this back and forth is what we can expect for awhile as we navigate how to mama well and work well.

New New New

New New New
What a whirlwind before our big F/W Collection release. It's like we're little elves, scurrying to make Christmas happen. There's a buzz, an excitement that comes with putting together one of the biggest events of the year. Now that we're a part of multiple showrooms trade shows, our release calendar is taking on a different form and planning for seasons ahead is becoming an essential part of making our business turn.

A Word From The Team

A Word From The Team
When I first started Our Heiday, I knew that finding and investing in the right people was going to be the most rewarding, challenging, and necessary part of making this thing sail. Growing up with my mom running a vibrant wholesale business in downtown LA shaped so much of how I wanted this company to grow. She has had some employees with her for almost 30 years (for me, an absolute yes), but the company is so dependent on her presence to run (for me, an absolute no). The gift of watching your immigrant mother who learned to speak English when she first came to the US (and Spanish as she continued to work with her team) run a successful business that allows her to be creative and savvy is something I don't take lightly. There are many things I've taken away from this internalization of a strong, warm, and incredibly giving boss lady of a mama that has very much informed how we run things here.

Our New Studio

Our New Studio
What a whirlwind. We're here, we're nearly settled. With two new members of our team and Donna going on maternity leave, we've had not only to set up our entire studio again (the warehouse, inventory, desks, computers, servers, printers, the whole thing), but also transition people in and one out. It's been a constant go, go, go, but the incredible collaborative energy of everyone here has been a thrill to be a part of. We are so blessed to have the people who make this ship sail.

Love All Around

Love All Around
Love and light, love and light. We try to keep this a consistent undercurrent of all that we do here and often it's the subtleties of the the day to day that make love harder to give, harder to receive. And this is the beauty of tradition - regardless of what you think about sparkles, red hearts, roses and candy - it forces us to stop, pause, and celebrate something meaningful.
